Application Of Wireless Communication Technology In Intelligent Watt Hour Meter

High speed, high reliability and high security communication is the foundation of smart grid. The traditional centralized meter reading system adds a lot of communication terminals to solve the communication problem, but the efficiency is not high, too many nodes in the system lead to the decline of stability. In smart grid, it is more inclined to integrate communication into smart meter, and wireless communication is more and more used because of its simple construction, stability and high speed. This paper will discuss the application of various wireless technologies including ZigBee, WiFi, GPRS in smart meters and the promotion of smart grid.

The communication is integrated into the watt hour meter to simplify the system structure      As early as the 1990s, in order to replace the manual meter reading system with heavy workload and easy to make mistakes, a remote centralized meter reading system appeared. The system structure is relatively complex. There are at least three layers of communication network between the electric energy meter and the master station. The number of communication layers is easy to cause the instability of the system, and the overall communication speed is difficult to improve. In order to improve the communication speed and stability of the system, a better way is to integrate the communication into the energy meter and reduce the number of intermediate nodes. For example, there is only one layer of communication between the master station and the energy meter, so the system structure will become very simple.    
Smart meter integrated with different wireless communication modes    

1. Electric energy meter integrated with GPRS In the field of electric power, GPRS has been widely used. For example, the centralized meter reading system mentioned above usually uses GPRS to upload data. GPRS has the following advantages:     
1) Wide signal coverage;    
2) The speed is fast;     
3) The communication is stable;     
4) The cost is low.      
The integration of GPRS module in the smart meter can realize the direct communication between the meter and the master station and simplify the network structure. It can realize the real-time acquisition of electric energy meter data. In addition to electricity data, it can also collect a large number of data such as current, voltage, power, power factor, frequency, etc. the shortest data acquisition cycle can reach less than 1 minute.    

2. Watt hour meter integrated with WiFi      
WiFi can realize the remote transmission of data through network router. At the same time, as a hot spot, WiFi can also realize the short-range data sharing and application. In addition to traditional data acquisition, WiFi technology can also realize intelligent control and smart home. All kinds of household appliances through intelligent transformation, add WiFi wireless communication function, each appliance has an IP address, so that it can send control commands to the appliances through the wireless network, such as starting the air conditioner, adjusting the temperature, etc; At the same time, it can also read the electrical parameters of electrical appliances in real time, such as voltage, current, frequency, power, power factor and so on [3]. In this way, WiFi watt hour meter as a center, users can get information and control through mobile app.    

3. Energy meter integrated with ZigBee      
ZigBee technology is a short-range, low-power wireless communication technology, which is characterized by short-range, low complexity, self-organization, low power consumption and low data rate. ZigBee network has self-organization function: without human intervention, network nodes can sense the existence of other nodes and determine the connection relationship to form a structured network [4]. If we need to realize the communication between the meter and the master station, we must add a terminal, so there are two layers of communication network between the meter and the master station, which is a situation between the traditional centralized meter reading system and the simplified system. However, due to its low power, high frequency (2.4GHz) and poor penetration, ZigBee has great limitations.       

Design of pluggable modularization      
A variety of wireless technologies have their own characteristics and different application occasions. If different energy meters are designed for different technologies, the cost is too high and the universality is poor. Therefore, pluggable modular design should be adopted, and the functions of meters are basically similar except for communication, including metering, measurement, event recording, alarm, data storage, etc. In the communication part, the modules of different communication modes are inserted into the meter through the serial interface by using the same shell mold, so that the meter can replace the appropriate communication module according to the actual situatio
